Girl, 12, Set to Become Australias Youngest Mum

The worlds arms were in a flap when a 13 year old boy in England was to become the Country’s youngest father. Jokes were being fired from all directions about the state of things, and the boy critiqued for being interested in things such as Sex, at an age where boys generally like Pokemon and Aus-kick. Now, a 12 year old girl has fallen pregnant and is set to become Australia’s youngest mother; breaking International records.

The girl cannot yet be named for privacy reasons, but it has been told to the Department of Community Services (DoCS) that the girl became pregnant after her boyfriend, 15 years old, moved in with her. They two had been sharing a bed since the age of 11, though it is unsure of when the couple became sexually active.

The mother-to-bes’ father pleaded with the girls mother not to let the boyfriend move in; he even went to the Police and DoCS to make formal complains. These, however, fell on deaf ears. According to Police, there was little they could do as both children were under the Age of Consent and the girl did not raise sexual assault or harassment charges when interviewed.

The girls mother was later sent to a mental health unit at a hospital in March, and the father took over custody of the girl. It was then that he discovered she was pregnant.
Once this came out, DoCS has admitted that they should have acted earlier to avoid such a situation, but they were pressed with more urgent cases.

The girls father has said that he and his partner are happy to look after the child if needed. DoCS has said that continuing counceling, support and education will be available to the girl.

This is a Prime Example that children should be exposed to Sexual Education at a younger age then ever thought previously. This girl, just 12 years old, will be giving birth to a baby. This is a feat that even some 30 or 40 year old women feel that they have inadequate experience for, and the situation could have been completely avoided.
It is unknown if the couple had ever used condoms or contraception, but there is a great chance they they hadn’t. Unfortunately, while people who are underage to have still have sex, they have more limited access to gaining methods of contraception that actually work.

Children are becoming sexually active at a younger age, however Schools and Government have refused to start teaching Sexual Education at younger levels. It’s well and good to hope that by teaching it at Year 9, Children will wait until then to actually practice it. Truth is that it doesn’t work like that. By year 9, a substantial amount of the class may already be at risk.

When I was 12, I was just moving from my mothers to my fathers and completing Year 7 at my Primary School. My main concerns were finishing some homework and what I was going to have on my sandwhich the next day. I hadn’t even kissed a girl, let alone starting having sex yet. I shake my head at these children.
