Australia To Legalise Same Sex Marriage?

If Australia went to vote right now on the topic of Gay Marriage, there is a fair chance that it would be ruled against the Gay Community. Not because the majority of people do not support it, but because the majority who DO support it can’t yet vote.

A recent poll highlighted by news.com.au showed that in fact, a majority of Australians are supportive of Gay Marriage.

1100 People were interviewed and 60% of these were in favour of Gay Marriage. While it isn’t a gaping difference, it would certainly be enough to push the government in the right direction. Some of the stats included:

  • 58% of people believed we should recognise SSA couples who were married overseas
  • 75% of Green Voters support Gay Marriage compared to
  • 63% Labor and
  • 49% Coalition
  • 65% of woman support Gay Marriage while
  • 51% of men do
  • 74% of people aged 16-24 support gay marriage, being the biggest supporting demographic.
  • 45% of people over 50 support it.

Openly gay Greens Leader Bob Brown is quoted as saying The Australian people are way ahead of the Rudd Government and the Turnbull Opposition…. It would be supported, very likely, by a majority of the Christian community

By the look of the figures, a majority of younger people, not even 18 yet, are in support of SSA people having the right to be married. I look forward to the next vote, 2012, to see if these people who will then be 18 vote in favour of a Government willing to promise this. This is a hot political topic in the next few years, so watch this space.

The name or the authenticity of the poll done in question was no released, however I figured we can do a small poll for ourselves.
