Take A Step Out of Line
Posted on May 27th, 2009 No commentsIn todays world we are often too focused on taking steps forward that we lose sight of where we are actually going. The idea of taking a step or two back is often approached with an extremely negative attitude, a social stigma. What I challenge you to do though is just that: take a step back and review life.
Indeed, sometimes it isn’t even taking a step back to view things, but a step out of line. I often picture life as a bunch of busy highways. Everynow and then you need to pull over to refuel your body, to get a perspective on where you’re heading. Often people don’t do this, and I almost bet that 90+% of the people who read this don’t do it. Take a step out of line.
I know all the excuses, so don’t bother opening your mouth to tell me a new one. Today, on a break or on the way to the car in the U-Park or something like that, sit down. Huh? Sit down on a park bench. If you can, sit in a garden or somethign like that and watch all the people go by.

Notice the looks on their faces, and the stress in their shoulders. Notice the people in suits walking in a bustled way. Notice the students with backpacks which are hurting their backs, and notice the make up on the drop-outs faces. Sit their and think about your own life. Where are you heading? Is it really all that important? What are the things that you are stressed about right now? Take a deep breath in and watch as the cars go by. Bathe in the idea that you are just one part of this society, one miniscule part of humanity. Then glory in the knowledge that without you, without the individual building blocks there would be no humanity. There would be no society.
Take a step out of line, and watch the traffic continue to flow down the freeway out of control. When you decide to jump back in, do it with a lighter heart and a bouncier step. Remember that nothing in this world is really worth worrying over. If you are worrying about it, then change it. If you can’t change it, there is not point in worrying about it.
I take a step out of line as often as I can; generally everyday. I find that it grounds me and reminds me I am nothing more than the next person. A feeling I like.
